about

I first wrote the main riff last year, and extrapolated everything out from that. It has a real swagger that I fell in love with. and I wanted to beat the audience over the head with it. I love film, and I based the lyrics about this idea I had about film. I pulled this one together pretty quickly, kept the lyrics and structure quite simple to focus on the performance. Songs tell you what they want to be, how they should feel. You just have to listen, and not force it. It definitely has a kind of Queens of the Stone Age feel to it, and once I had figured that out, I leaned into it.

I'm really pleased with everyone's performance in it – Ed's disco drums and congas (!), Danie's backing vocals, Brendan's throbbing bass and his breakdown with Ed. But the icing on the cake for me is Rob's lead break and that whole middle section. I deliberately made that section longer so we could just sit in that groove for a while. It's a really nice, unexpected left turn after what we have established in the first half of the song. I like songs that surprise you.

lyrics

I'll tell you a secret
And show you everything
Then leave them wanting more

King Kong
Couldn't save you
King Kong

Climb the devil's backbone
Until the hills run red
Climb the devil's backbone
Until the hills run red

King Kong
Couldn't save you
King Kong

Find the woman
Clothed in the sun
Now kiss those girls
And make them die

King Kong
Couldn't save you
King Kong
